Kori Martin, a Kentucky-bound senior at Hamilton High and the Arizona state record holder in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a wind-legal effort of 13.32 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her debut April 6 at the 56th Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High in California. Martin, who produced the record performance March 23 at the 84th Nike Chandler Rotary Invitational in Arizona, is scheduled to compete at Arcadia in the invitational 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. She shares how significant it was to be able to lower her personal best so early in the season and how meaningful it was to achieve the record on Arizona soil. Martin explains how grateful she is to have the platform to compete at Arcadia as a senior, especially because of her background of previously living in Pasadena, Calif., when she was younger, and the opportunities to race against national-caliber fields ahead of the postseason in Arizona and possible races following the Open state championship in May. She revisits the experiences of competing in June at the Brooks PR Invitational in Washington, in addition to the USATF Under-20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and how valuable that competition was ahead of racing her senior year. Martin reflects on being able to recover from a torn ACL as a sophomore and how her faith was instrumental during the recovery and rehabilitation, and how her spiritual journey has been able to enhance her athletic career, especially the past two seasons. She highlights how impressive the legacy has been of the top female and male hurdlers in Arizona prep history, especially in recent years, and how exciting it is to be able to compete against Annaleise Taylor of Canyon View, and following the success of Saira Prince from Williams Field, Joy Moorer of North Canyon and Ma'Kayla Dickerson from Betty H. Fairfax. Martin also examines how impactful the hurdling efforts of Vance Nilsson from Gilbert High have been as well in recent years, following the performances of Yan Vazquez from Red Mountain and James Smith of Westwood. She speaks about her excitement to compete at Arcadia against junior Taylor Cox of Union Catholic from New Jersey, the reigning New Balance Nationals Indoor 60-meter hurdles champion. Martin expresses gratitude for the support of her family and coaches, especially during the recruiting process, and her relief to have already made the decision to attend Kentucky, with the opportunity to be mentored from Wildcats coach Lonnie Greene, along with training with several elite collegiate and professional hurdlers. She also analyzes the preparation for both the Arizona Division 1 final, as well as the Open state championship meet, and how important the experience was to race both weekends last year.
